Planet Ark Environmental Foundation is calling on Aussie workplaces to dig through their documents and participate in a ‘Friday File Fling’ as part of National Recycling Week from November 10-16.

The not-for-profit environmental organisation is encouraging business owners across Australia to allocate time of Friday November 14 for their staff to sort through filing cabinets and desk drawers for old and redundant documents to can be recycled. Single-sided paper can be re-used for notepaper and confidential documents should be recycled through secure destruction and recycling services.

Paper, paper products and cardboard make up the second largest component of the 12.5 million tonnes of waste produced by Aussie businesses each year, and buying Australian-made recycled paper is an important step in closing the recycling loop. With free, industry supported programs such as ‘Catridges 4 Planet Ark’, MobileMuster and www.BusinessRecycling.com.au making it easier, workplaces are now recycling a growing number of materials.

Brad Gray from Planet Ark said that Australian workplaces are good at recycling the paper they used everyday, but that remains tonnes of high-quality office paper stored in files that in most cases will never be used again.

“The Friday File Fling is a great opportunity to de-clutter the office and get that paper back into circulation” Gray said. “But recycling is only half the equation. Unless you are buying recycled paper, you’re not really recycling, you’re only doing half the job.

“Some people think that recycled paper is of a lower quality to virgin paper. However, technology has moved on to the point that most paper users couldn’t tell the difference between new and recycled paper in either performance or appearance.”

The first 1,000 workplaces that register for a Friday File Fling will receive a free ream of Reflex White 100% Recycled paper. Business owners can register their Fling by calling the National Recycling Hotline on 1300 733 712. Further information is available at www.recyclingweek.planetark.org.
