Instead of being overwhelmed by feelings of inadequacy, one business owner says constantly thinking you can improve is not only healthy but good for business.
Despite successfully managing working weeks of up to 90 hours and spending an average of 120 nights per year away from home, sales educator, real estate auctioneer and News Corp Australia executive Tom Panos is proud to say he has room for improvement.
“I actually think that I can improve and … thinking that you can improve is probably a good belief set to have, because it constantly means that you're not becoming complacent,” he explains.
“Nothing breeds failure like success. It creates arrogance. I've always been a good salesperson, but I think working for Rupert Murdoch has taught me the importance of process.
“Being such a big publicly listed company, we're probably over-process driven and the reason why is, with thousands and thousands of people, we clearly know that the only way you're going to run a business is to make sure that there's lots of checks and balances along the way.
“I think what I've done is taken a little bit of the big corporate company of strict governance, together with the hustle and street-smartness [of small business] and put it together.”
However, Tom admits that no matter how well he develops and instils these processes in his business, he is always thinking of ways that things could be further enhanced and greater efficiencies made.
“There are days that I lie in bed at two or three in the morning, thinking to myself ‘That could be better’,” he says.
