Capitalising on cultural diversity in private sector workplaces

nswThe New South Wales Government will ask small and medium businesses to help it devise strategies to maximise the value of cultural diversity in the workplace.

Representatives from small-to-medium sized enterprises will be included on a Ministerial Roundtable on Workplace Diversity to be established by the New South Wales Government.

The roundtable, supported by the state’s Community Relations Commission, will focus on strategies for maximising the value of cultural diversity in private sector workplaces.

The roundtable will specifically look at:

-      opportunities for measuring and communicating the value of a culturally diverse workplace across the private sector;

-      options for recognising the achievement of organisations that demonstrate practices that encourage and support cultural diversity in the workplace;

-      the development of leading practices that would make an organisation a 'Preferred Employer' or an 'Employer of Choice' for culturally and linguistically diverse workforces; and

-      proposals for a voluntary assessment scheme for which private sector agencies could be identified as a 'Preferred Employer'.

The roundtable will be chaired by the Minister for Citizenship and Communities, Victor Dominello.

As well as SME representatives, it will comprise the chief executives and other senior managers from a range of large businesses based in NSW.

"Our businesses and other organisations have the opportunity to use the unique cultural and linguistic skills of the over 40% of people in NSW with at least one parent born overseas," Mr Dominello said.

"Through the roundtable, business and organisational leaders already demonstrating an international or culturally diverse character can help show their peers the way.

"The roundtable will hear about the benefits of attracting and retaining diverse employees and then leveraging that diversity,” according to the Minister.

“That includes generating new markets and clients, and providing better services to the growing number of multicultural customers.

"Our objective is to identify opportunities for business and other non-government organisations to further diversify their workforces so they are representative of the broader NSW community.

“We also want to work with these organisations to capture the economic and social benefits of workplace cultural diversity.

"Cultural diversity makes business sense because the future of the local, regional and global economy is culturally diverse," Mr Dominello said.
