AMEX kicks off Shop Small campaign to support small business

A month-long, national campaign by American Express kicks off today with the noble aim of reconnecting consumers with small businesses in their communities to breathe renewed life into Australia’s small business economy.

The national Shop Small campaign, which is running for the full month of November, was motivated by recent American Express research that alarmingly found that more than two thirds of retail small business owners feel forgotten by their local communities, while one in four feel no connection at all to the communities where they operate.

Founded by American Express overseas in 2010, the Shop Small campaign is credited with stimulating consumer spending with small retailers and service providers in the US, Canada and the UK. Launching the campaign on our shores, Jason Fryer, General Manager of Small Business Services at American Express, said it’s clear small businesses feel overlooked by their own communities.

“It’s time to reverse this trend and rally behind small businesses,” Fryer said. “Shop Small aims to reconnect Australians to small businesses and the value they offer to consumers, communities and the economy at large. We encourage Australians and communities throughout Australia to support their local businesses and to Shop Small throughout the month of November and beyond.”

In partnership with American Express, Shop Small is presented by Energy Australia, MYOB, NAB and Virgin Australia, and supported by Facebook, GIO, Netregistry, Officeworks, COSBOA, Restaurant and Catering Australia, Accommodation Association of Australia, Australian Hotels Association and Tourism Accommodation Australia.

The campaign includes free Shop Small business building seminars in Melbourne (Hilton on the Park, Nov 18) and Sydney (Hilton Hotel, Nov 22) aimed at providing attendees with opportunities to learn practical, profit boosting, business building strategies.
