Sydney small businesses in the creative industries can now access specialised advice for free following the appointment of creative industry veteran Monica Davidson as a specialist Small Biz Connect advisor.

Announced jointly by NSW Deputy Premier Andrew Stoner and NSW Minister for Small Business Katrina Hodgkinson, Davidson will serve as the State’s first Creative Industries Business Advisor.

“Earlier this year we pulled together some of the best minds in the State to develop an Industry Action Plan to drive growth, innovation and productivity across the NSW creative industries,” Stoner said. “One of the recommendations of the Taskforce was to provide tailored advisory services to develop businesses’ capabilities in the creative industries, and I am pleased to announce today that we are delivering on this.”

“Small businesses, whether they’re just starting off or expanding, need high-quality personalised advice and that is what Small Biz Connect provides,” Hodgkinson added. “By creating a Small Biz Connect advisor specifically for the creative industries, we are providing this vital small business sector with access to the specialised knowledge and advice that meets their distinct needs.”

The Small Biz Connect Creative Industries Business Advisor will be engaged as part of a 12-month pilot providing advice to people in the creative industries to start, run and grow their businesses. Davidson has an extensive background working as a mentor, freelance writer, and filmmaker. Chair of the Creative Industries Taskforce and CEO of ARIA, Dan Rosen, welcomed the appointment, saying it identified the need to provide business advisors with experience in the creative industries.

“This pilot represents a very good opportunity for small businesses in the creative industries to access tailored, face-to-face support and to build a case for the need for this service moving into the future,” Rosen said.

Small businesses in NSW, in both creative and other industries, can access the support of local business experts by calling 1300 134 359 or visiting www.smallbusiness.nsw.gov.au.
