“This afternoon’s announcement by new Federal Small Business Minister, the Hon Kelly O’Dwyer MP, that the Government will support in the lower house increased thresholds for Unfair Contract Terms Legislation as amended in the Senate, is fantastic news for our members!” said ANF CEO Alf Maccioni today.

“It is a very important issue for newsagents and one that we have lobbied hard for meaningful change on over many years.”

“The thresholds in the original legislation were too low to have a meaningful effect on the contracting environment in our industry, and to moderate behaviours. We recommended an amendment to increase the thresholds from $100k to $300k for 1-year contracts, and from $250k to $1 million for multi-year contracts as a sensible compromise position when we met with the Greens and other senate crossbench members prior to the Senate looking at the legislation. “

“The support we received from the Greens Small Business spokesperson who proposed the amendment, and the senate who supported it, was vital.”

“We applaud the decisive action today by the Small Business Minister and the Government in supporting the increased but balanced thresholds. This has cleared the way for this valuable Bill and also realised the Governments leadership in introducing this significant reform.”

“The legislation will have a material and long-term impact on the contracting environment for Australian small business owners like newsagents and their families. It will introduce greater levels of fairness and equity into our members contracting relationships and the government should be applauded for this.” Mr Maccioni concluded
