Two government agencies have launched public consultations for SME owners in a bid to identify the pain points for small business operators in using their services.

Two government agencies have launched public consultations for SME owners in a bid to identify the pain points for small business operators in using their services.

The new Australian Small Business and Family Enterprise Ombudsman service will soon launch a formal consultation process in a bid to identify the key issues affecting small businesses, as well as how the service could best advocate on their behalf.

Ombudsman Kate Carnell AO, who took up the post on 11 March, did not disclose the dates of the upcoming consultation period.

However, in a statement on the Ombudsman service’s newly launched website, she said the process “will include a discussion paper and link to an exciting and interactive online platform we have established for sharing ideas, which will be live for the duration of the consultation period.”

Meanwhile IP Australia – the federal government’s agency for intellectual property – is holding a creative competition to unearth stories from Australian start-ups and small businesses.

IP Australia is looking for business owners to share their experiences of using patents or trademarks and how this has impacted their businesses, as well as the future of their IP protection requirements.

Entrants will be eligible to win up to $5,000 to go towards a local incubator hub space, with winners to be announced on World IP Day on Tuesday, 26 April.

Submissions can be made via Facebook or Twitter by tagging IP Australia, or emailing the organisation by 11pm on Tuesday, 12 April. More information is available on the IP Australia website.
