The trick to wearing different job hats

Business owners wear a lot of hats – salesperson, accountant, recruiter, manager and even cleaner. Transitioning effectively between those functions can be a real challenge.

For Tom Panos, a sales educator and real estate auctioneer as well as a sales executive at News Corp Australia, those different hats can involve managing a large team of people, speaking to an audience of hundreds of people and conducting on-site auctions.

He says that having operated this way for many years, transitioning between these hats has become second nature for him. But it wasn’t always like this.Party hats and party horns

“Until you get to that state, I think what you’ve got to do is work very, very hard to create what I call rituals and habits,” explains Tom.

“I don't think that businesspeople create a world-class business. I think businesspeople create world-class habits that [in turn] create a world-class business.”

Part of that habit-making process involved drilling down to the core tasks you must do, and eliminating superfluous tasks that become distractions.

“You don't become overwhelmed by thinking to yourself, ‘What's the 27th step I've got to do?’. You actually sit there and say to yourself, ‘These are the things that need to be done, that are the most critical events’ and you actually create rituals and habits over them.”

He jokes: “If I was going to get assassinated, I would be a very easy target because it's extremely predictable on my behaviour on what I do. People know where I am typically at various parts of the day. It's very repeatable.”
