Meet My Business Award winner: Glenn Mackay

What does it take to win a My Business Award? We talk with Glenn Mackay who, together with his wife Miranda, runs G&M Event Group, winner of the 2015 Workplace of the Year award.

My Business: Why did you start your own business?

Glenn Mackay: I had been working for another DJ company back in 1998 and always felt like there was a distinct lack of service from that company to their clients. Just like any 19-year-old, I already knew everything, so I thought I could do it better. Even though we made a lot of mistakes in the early years, we made sure to learn from them and grow. It wasn’t long before we were getting too busy to handle all the work ourselves.

MB: How has the business evolved since its inception?

GM: We see our evolution as constant. We welcome change and over the years our business has continued to grow. Originally working from our house, we’ve since gone on to an office and warehouse with a team of four full-time staff and 12 casual staff.

MB: What are some of the challenges you’ve faced and how have you overcome them?

GM: We’re constantly competing with part-time hobbyist DJs, many of whom don’t charge GST and just want a bit of cash on the side. To overcome this, we’ve positioned ourselves as a premium-level service and undertaken training and development to ensure what we do is of the highest standard. We’ve also made sure our level of customer service can’t be matched and we work hard to ensure we stay at the top of our game.

MB: What’s the best business decision you’ve ever made?

GM: Travelling overseas to undertake performance workshop training with the best in the world. That also opened my mind to learning how to run our business more professionally. Essentially, this has led to developing a network of elite wedding entertainers across the world that allows us to share with [them] and draw on their experience.

MB: What did it mean for you to be recognised as a My Business Award winner in 2015?

GM: It gave us confirmation that what we are doing is working. In our industry, our business model is very unique, but we know it works. The award recognises that. It’s also a motivator to continue to push the envelope, disrupt the status quo and take calculated risks.

MB: Share with us some of your bigger successes.

GM: We have received a great deal of recognition over and above our My Business Award. We were declared the Queensland Wedding MC of the Year by ABIA from 2012 to 2015, and in 2015 we were also declared National Wedding MC of the Year. Two of our team members are the only two people in Australia (and two of only 28 globally) to be certified wedding entertainment directors with the WED Guild, and I am part of the International DJ News Academy executive board and vice-chairman of the DJ Alliance of Australasia. Most importantly to us, we’ve built a business that supports our family and our team’s families, and also provides lasting memories for our clients.

MB: Do you have a business motto?

GM: Performing above expectations to make a difference in people’s lives.
