Kirsty Keane has already pioneered one online business, ciaobellatravel.com.au. Now she's getting into group buying with cherrypickme.com.au, and shares her outlook on business in this Q&A.

Q: What’s the one thing you wish you’d known before you started in business?

A: It’s a marathon, not a sprint!

Q: What are your most effective work habits?

A: Knowing my weak points and recruiting, delegating or outsourcing these areas to people who are really good at them.

Q: The most important person in your business is …

A: … business is my sister and business partner, Sarah Tate. because ... she gets things done. Honestly the woman is a machine.

Q: Best business decision you’ve ever made?

A: Launching www.cherrypickme.com.au as we can apply everything we have learnt from starting our other online business www.ciaobellatravel.com.au and at the same time discover and help promote fantastic online stores.

Q: What’s the biggest mistake you ever made in business? How did you fix it?

A: The mistakes I have made have generally been the result of not having the confidence to back myself and instead being swayed by someone else’s opinions. When making a decision I like to talk through my ideas and thoughts with another team member. But at the end of the day I try to remember to back my decisions.

Q: How do you delight customers?

A: By delivering on our promises and refreshing our service offering.

Q: Share your number one sales technique with us.

A: I try to identify and then gain a good understanding of the drivers, problems and key goals of the person I am negotiating with. I then make sure I address each when pitching our service.

Q: What’s your best tip for managing people?

A: Listening to people and validating their concerns and problems. I am also a big believer in giving credit where it is due as well as highlighting someone’s achievement to the rest of the team. The impact of positive feedback is amazing!

Q: Who do you most admire? Why?

A: Naomi Simson from Red Balloon Day’s. When she initially launched, business was slow. Naomi went out and created a whole new market for her business – corporate rewards and recognition programs – and is now recognised as a leader in this field. Very clever!

Q: What are your favourite websites and why they add value to your work?

A: Google Analytics. I love that I can track where each sale or member came from and use this to make more effective decisions on future marketing spend.

Q: How do you relax?

A: I am starting yoga next week!

Q: If someone gave you $100,000 and said “Invest this in your business by the end of the week – or lose it” what would you do?

A: Recruit more members for our sales team to secure more great deals for our members.

Q: Generation Y: are they as demanding as everyone says?

A: I don’t really find them demanding. I am pretty inspired by their confidence which, if I am being completely honest, used to annoy me a bit but now I just wish I had more of it when I was their age. I also love how the Gen Y’s I work with can be self-deprecating and have a great sense of humour but then can be serious when the job requires it.
