At last year’s My Business Awards, Appliances Online, a leading online retailer of appliances and white goods in Australia, took out both the PricewaterhouseCoopers Award for Best Medium Business and the overall ActionCOACH Award for outstanding Excellence. As winners of these two categories, business owner John Winning took home $5,000 worth of products and services from PricewaterhouseCoopers and $5,000 worth of products and services from ActionCOACH. Here we catch up with Winning to find out what Appliance Online’s double win means to him and his business.

My Business: What does it mean to you as a business owner to be recognised as a My Business Awards winner?
Appliances Online: It's a great honour to be recognised – and it helps to legitimise our business success to stakeholders. Winning awards is always reassuring that you're doing something right. It's always humbling to be recognised by your peers.
MB: Were you surprised when you were announced as the winner?
MB: How did you use your prizes from PricewaterhouseCoopers and ActionCOACH? Did they come in handy for your business?
AO: An ActionCOACH member came into our office and met with the leadership team, which helped us to put a thorough recruitment plan into action.
MB: How did you enjoy the 2011 My Business Awards?
AO: The event was a great night and we were able to network with other businesses and swap stories. It was a great networking opportunity.
MB: Would you encourage other SME owners to enter the 2012 My Business Awards?
AO: Entering awards often helps you to make sure your business strategy is on track. It is also a good PR opportunity if you do well.
MB: Was the time and effort you put into the entering process worth it in the end?
AO: I believe so. We will enter the My Business Awards again this year.
MB: How’s business at Appliances Online been in the seven months since the 2011 My Business Awards?
AO: We have worked on our national distribution network and have opened a warehouse in Adelaide to accompany warehouses in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Brisbane, as well as a satellite warehousing program. We have also launched Handy Crew, a national installation business.
