Mark Brennan named Australian Small Business Commissioner
After a lengthy search period, Federal Small Business Minister Brendan O'Connor has announced former Victorian Small Business Commissioner Mark Brennan as the inaugural Australian Small Business Commissioner.
O’Connor said Brennan was chosen from a list of strong candidates after calls earlier this year for expressions of interest in the role.
“Mr Brennan has had a distinguished career in both the private and public sectors,” O'Connor explains. “He is uniquely qualified, having served for seven years as the inaugural Victorian Small Business Commissioner, the first such position in any jurisdiction in Australia.”
As Australian Small Business Commissioner, Brennan, who will officially take up his new position on January 2 next year, will work closely with the Gillard Government to advise on issues that impact Australia's three million small businesses.
The Commissioner will also work in consultation with industry and other governments to ensure that small business concerns are heard and taken into consideration across Government. Through the Commissioner, the government says small business owners will be able to access information, advice and referral to services including business advisory and dispute resolution services.
“I don’t want to be too prescriptive around the role of the Commissioner because it is an independent position and I want Mr Brennan to have the flexibility to make the role his own,” O’Connor stresses.
“Not only does Mr Brennan have a vast amount of experience and knowledge, he also understands that government needs frank and objective advice and the small business community needs strong advocates.
