Every small business owner has stories of working countless hours, pouring their heart and soul into their business. But what should be the cut-off to preserve the work-life balance?
Speaking on the My Business Podcast, Alexander Laureti of accounting firm LMS Advisory says he works approximately 60 to 80 hours per week, and feels there is no such thing as “working too much”.
“To be honest, I don't keep track of it,” he says.
“The day that I come back home and I say, ‘I've worked too many hours this week’, then the passion might be dying in the business that you're working on.
“I've had conversations with friends saying, ‘You work too much. You need to relax a little bit more’. It's not something that I've ever questioned or said, ‘I feel like I'm working too much’.”
For Alexander, it is a case of either working to service clients directly, or working on the business to improve the client experience.
“I'm building something that helps a lot of people, helps myself, for my family and everybody else,” he explains.
“Whether it's 100 hours this week or whether it's only a 30-hour week because I've got a great team there and I can take a couple of days off, I've never really kept track of it all that much.
“I'm not also going to say, then, that there wasn't a lot of hard work that was required along the way.”
He says that in recent times, the added connectivity of the internet and the ability to receive and reply to work-related emails at any time means that “you're always on call, you're always available”.
“Technically, we're always working,” says Alexander.
“It's trying to find that balance between saying, ‘Now I'm working, but now we need to find that balance and mix a bit of home life in there as well’.”
Regardless of working 60 to 80 hours per week, Alexander believes he has achieved a good work-life balance.
“At the moment I feel like I've built a really good business that I can take that time whenever I need to, to be able to spend time at home. By the same token, be able to dedicate as many hours that I need to, to continue growing that business where I want it to go,” he says.
