A simple yet effective new phone scam is doing the rounds that risks catching busy business owners and their staff off guard.
Media reports have suggested that many people across the country have received missed calls from an unknown international number.
The caller hangs up after one or two rings, and when the recipient of the missed call dials back, they are either put on hold or left talking to someone who does not speak English.
It is only when the recipient of the international call receives their phone bill that they realise they have been tricked into calling an expensive number, similar to psychic and phone sex hotlines.
There have been reports that anyone who simply ignores the initial call will increasingly be bombarded with calls from the same number. Mobile users appear to be the primary target of the scam.
My Business has received such a suspect call, but immediately blocked the number. To date, there have been no more such calls received.
It is not immediately clear whether the ACCC is aware of the scam.
