The Federal Government's newest resource for small business is the Small Business Resource Kit, and it comes on a USB stick.
Federal Small Business Minister Senator Nick Sherry has launched a new Small Business Resource Kit (SBRK), which he described as “a substantial, well-designed addition to our other initiatives that's just right for this age, when the computer is the universal tool of business”.
The new SBRK is a USB flash drive containing a range of resources, references and links, including publications for independent contractors, plus the latest versions of the Starting Your Business and Growing Your Business checklists. It’s also linked to www.business.gov.au, which has an almost overwhelming number of resources for small businesses.
A couple of features that Senator Sherry highlighted in the launch are ‘Advisor Finder’, ‘Grant and Assistance Finder’ and ‘Business Loan Finder’, which obviously enough help you to compare and find those things. It might not sound like a big deal, but if you’ve ever tried to search for grants or loans, you’ll know it can be something of a nightmare — anything that streamlines the process has got to be a good thing.
The kit (and the website) also includes a selection of ‘planning templates’ for business, marketing and succession plans — making these kind of plans can often fall into the ‘I don’t even know where to begin’ category when you’re starting out in business, so even basic templates should be helpful.
I’m not sure that the SBRK provides anything that isn’t already out there, but the point is that it pulls together a whole lot of resources, saving you the time of trawling for them yourself. Makes sense to me. I know that when I first became partner in a small business 15 years ago, I didn’t have a clue; I might have made fewer mistakes with easy access to more information.
