Amazon breaks the ice with Aussie businesses

Retail giant Amazon has announced its first event in Australia, aimed at engaging with local businesses looking to sell through its global marketplace.

Together with the SME Association of Australia (SMEAA) and the Australian Retailers Association (ARA), Amazon will host a free summit next month, aimed at demonstrating how Australian sellers can use its online marketplace to boost sales.

As well as representatives from Amazon and the two associations, entrepreneurs already using use the Amazon platform internationally will be speaking at the Amazon Marketplace Seller Summit in Sydney to reveal the returns their businesses have achieved to date.

“Amazon launching in Australia marks an exciting time for Australian entrepreneurs,” said Adam Mills, CTO and founder of KoalaSafe, for which Amazon Marketplace is its biggest channel.

“For those who are selling physical products, Amazon provides a great opportunity to get these products in front of customers and we encourage businesses to take full advantage.”

The ARA’s Russell Zimmerman has previously told My Business that the idea of Amazon being the bringer of doom for Australian businesses is completely overblown.

“Retail has changed forever – it has always been changing, and it will continue to change. And so the retailers that are smart retailers, that are looking forward and working out their plans, building their unique customer proposition, seeking brands … to move forward, getting everything lined up, are the retailers that will succeed,” he said.

“We believe that Amazon’s arrival brings new possibilities to Australian retailers, small and large. We are pleased to work alongside Amazon to bring the Seller Summit to Sydney so that businesses and retailers alike can receive practical advice and guidance on how to make the most of Amazon Marketplace.”

More than 500 sellers have already registered to sell through Amazon in Australia, although an official launch date has yet to be publicly revealed.
