The Australian Bureau of Statistics has released a new round of internet and social media usage figures that show that more micro businesses are using the internet to let employees work from home or other locations.
According to the new figures, more than a third of micro businesses (those with zero to four employees) now use the internet to enable staff to work from home, an eight percentage point increase from two years ago. Further stats from the ABS include that, while 52 per cent of businesses with 200 or more employees use social media, only a mere 13 per cent of micro businesses use such platforms.
Businesses in the Arts and recreation services industry were the biggest users of social media, with nearly half having a presence on social media, followed by the Information media and telecommunications industry,” Andrew Puljic, ABS Director of the Innovation and Technology Statistics Branch, said.
The ABS’ Business Use of Information Technology study also found that four in five Australian businesses with internet access use it for financial activities including online banking, invoicing and payments, but not all businesses with internet access have a website or other web presence. Nearly two thirds of these businesses said they did not see the need to have a website, and one quarter reported they lacked the technical expertise to set one up.
