A list of the most sought-after skills in 2018 has been compiled by a major recruitment agency, highlighting the areas where businesses will be aggressively competing for talent this year.
In its 2018 Jobs Report for the first half of the calendar year, Hays found that a mixture of strong population growth, a dynamic business market and evolving technologies are driving employment growth, meaning that experienced workers in these areas will be increasingly difficult to find.
“We start 2018 off the back of a strong, stable run of jobs growth where the labour market grew by over 383,000 positions in the past 12 months. Basically, more people are looking for and finding work,” said Hays managing director Australia and New Zealand, Nick Deligiannis.
“New calendar year hires will add to momentum as employers fill gaps in their headcount to take advantage of strong economic conditions.”
Mr Deligiannis said the key industries will be construction, healthcare, IT, professional services and telecommunications.

- Commercial analysts, in response to a greater focus on growth and a desire for revenue generation to be driven from finance, not operations
- Data analysts with both hard and soft skills who can use digital tools and pull data together while managing stakeholders and communicating the evidence for decision-making purposes
- Digital marketing analysts who are experienced digital marketers and can also implement a full marketing strategy
- Cyber security and DevOps specialists, as the need for risk mitigation and process improvements increase
- PHP, Drupal, Native iOS and Android and Microsoft SQL BI developers, given the popularity of these tools
- Business development managers to drive new business growth
- HR business partners, to imbed HR into a business and ensure internal clients have a strong point of contact for HR issues
- Executive assistants with strong experience
- Change analysts with skills in organisational change
- Policy officers, in response to various initiatives, particularly in the areas of family violence and the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)
- Procurement professionals with full end-to-end experience, especially around service contracts as opposed to goods
- Property and construction lawyers given the active property market
- Experienced residential property managers
- Project managers, site managers and contract administrators for construction projects
- Project lead architects with exposure to all stages of a project
- Facilities managers/facilities co-ordinators since new and ageing buildings require planned and reactive maintenance
- Civil design engineers in the residential land development and subdivision market
- Schedulers/planners in the energy sector, particularly Primavera P6 specialists with large-scale project experience
- Clinical research associates as more clinical trials are conducted in Australia
- Social workers in the children and families space, including family and domestic violence
- Early childhood teachers in response to population growth
- Deputy principals and principals in the schools sector
- Mortgage lenders as banks promote existing performers and backfill vacated roles
- Insurance brokers who can perform the basics right and consult with clients
- Customer engagement managers as companies develop and implement strategies to build loyalty and improve the customer experience
- Skilled merchandise planners with traditional bricks and mortar Australian retail experience
- Continuous improvement managers as organisations look for ways to become more competitive in the manufacturing sector
- Fleet controllers with wharf experience, especially for night shifts
- Project engineers in the oil and gas sector as construction and upgrade projects commence in response to the demand for more gas
- Mechanical fitters in certain locations in response to expansions in the resources and mining industry
- Civil operators for a large number of civil projects.
