LEGO, discounted diamonds used to engage workers

Companies are increasingly turning to novel means of keeping their workforce engaged, productive and happy, LinkedIn’s list of the top employers has revealed.

Each year, LinkedIn produces a list of the 25 most desirable companies to work for as gauged by data garnered across its platform.

Interestingly, these businesses are increasingly focusing on the wellbeing, including mental health, of their workforce, and using unconventional tools in a bid to keep workers engaged, with the end goal of retaining them.

One emerging trend is allowing employees to “buy and sell” annual leave.

“The option to buy and sell annual leave is an emerging trend amongst Australia’s Top Companies. From purchasing extra holiday leave to spend time with family or cashing in unused days to boost your pay packet – it’s this freedom and flexibility that means employees are better able to balance work and home commitments and ultimately feel happier as a result” said Nicolette Logue, managing editor at LinkedIn Australia.

Another common tactic is introducing fun and stress-relieving activities into the workplace, that allow employees to take breaks from intensive tasks while simultaneously collaborating and engaging with their colleagues from across the business.

Accounting firm PwC Australia, for instance, has built a LEGO room to promote collaboration between workers, while Deloitte offers free cooking classes.

Meanwhile, KPMG has launched panel discussions on mental health at its offices nationally, whereby employees share their own struggles in an effort to normalise discussion of mental health and share strategies for coping with difficulties.

“Companies on this year’s top companies list recognise that they have a responsibility when it comes to promoting and protecting the health and wellbeing of their workforce. Employees at these top companies are accessing all sorts of valuable perks that have a genuine impact on their happiness,” noted Jason Laufer, Asia Pacific senior director of talent and learning solutions at LinkedIn.

“Examples of this are being able to buy and sell annual leave, ‘wellbeing’ leave days, yoga and mindfulness classes, onsite childcare, gym memberships or discounts, hot breakfasts and in the case of Rio Tinto, even discounts on diamonds!”

Mr Laufer added: “What all these companies have in common is a strong employer brand – actively promoting diversity, wellbeing and flexibility. As well as being supportive and providing terrific perks to their teams, it makes great business sense. Employees who feel valued, happy and supported are less likely to leave an organization, and more likely to promote the company to prospective employees.”
