The Randstad Employer Brand Research Report saw a notable upsurge in the popularity of technology companies, with Apple taking out top gong as Australia’s most attractive employer.
“Technology is ingrained into our everyday lives. From ordering food on the fly, to searching the latest jobs, the whole world is just a few taps away from your fingertips. Apple has led the technology revolution, so it’s no surprise that Aussies looking to ride the wave of innovation see the Californian tech giant and the technology sector in general as a great place to develop their careers,” said Randstad’s Frank Ribuot.
Next on the list were airlines Virgin Australia and Qantas in second and third respectively, followed by Competitive Foods Australia and the ABC.
Rounding out the top ten were Wesfarmers, the University of NSW, JB Hi-Fi, Australia Post and Cabrini.
And while technology was also ranked as the most attractive industry to work for, it was almost pipped by the early learning sector, which posted a massive 10 per cent increase in popularity in 2018, despite ongoing concerns about childcare costs and compliance.
Another surprise came in the form of retail, which ranked as Australia’s tenth most attractive industry, even as the sector languishes with low growth rates and a string of high-profile collapses.

However the divide between what workers want and what employers offer as incentives show a continued divide between the parties.
The report backed separate studies that found salary is not the most important factor for workers and jobhunters, with work/life balance ranking as the most desired facet for 54 per cent of the workforce.
“The 2018 Randstad Employer Brand Research confirms that workers aren’t solely focused on salary and long-term job security. It is the ability of companies to deliver a genuine, consistent and balanced experience that will prove to be the big winners in a competitive job market” Mr Ribuot said.
Salary and benefits was tied in second spot with job security, with a pleasant work atmosphere and good training rounding out the top five traits of desirable employers.
Businesses, meanwhile, ranked themselves being financially healthy as the top thing they offer their workforce, ahead of latest technologies, job security, a good reputation and career progression. That meant work/life balance didn’t even rank a mention in employers’ top five offerings.
“With 30 per cent of Australians planning to change roles within the next year, a markedly increased number from last year, we are calling on businesses to revitalise their employer value propositions,” Mr Ribuot concluded.
“It is crucial that companies present a true image of who they are and commit to it. That is the secret to the success of Australia’s most attractive employers.”
