First-choice employers are losing out on skilled workers because they are taking too long to respond to candidates post-interview, new research has revealed.
Almost two-thirds (63 per cent) of the 1,000 Australian jobseekers profiled by recruiter Robert Half said they had taken up less desirable job offer because their first choice took too long to respond to them.
Some 30 per cent waited for a staggering six weeks or more to hear back from a potential employer following an interview. In some instances, jobseekers never receive a response at all.
That corresponds with just 3 per cent who said they had received some degree of feedback on the day of the interview.
“Employers are in a fiercely competitive battle to find the right skills and talent to take their businesses forward, and they cannot afford to alienate potential workers with long drawn-out hiring processes,” said David Jones of Robert Half Asia Pacific.
“Top candidates know their skills are in demand, which makes it all the more worrying that so many are turning down their dream job because they’ve been left waiting for so long.”
Mr Jones acknowledged that it can take time for employers to attract a suitable pool of candidates, conduct interviews and make a decision, but that blowing out response times “will increase the risk of losing out on the best talent on the market”.
“Businesses need to conduct an in-depth review of their entire interview process from initial outreach to final job offer, to ensure that they are striking the right balance for today’s candidates,” he said.
According to the survey, one month is considered a reasonable time frame from application to final offer by virtually all (93 per cent) jobseekers, with just 9 per cent prepared to wait beyond that length of time.
Earlier this year, Robert Half released a list of the jobseekers’ biggest frustrations with the recruitment process, with slow feedback and decision-making top of the pile.
