Australia and New Zealand’s best employers were recognised in the 18th annual ranking of top performers, with many SMEs among the top-ranked workplaces.

In its 18th year, the Aon Best Employers list ranks workplaces in the two countries on a range of factors including employee engagement, staff retention and the business’ bottom line.

And unlike other surveys that tend to focus specifically on the corporate world, this ranking includes businesses of various size.

In 2018, the 15 top-ranked employers include the likes of Eden Brae Homes, Employsure, Geeves Scaffolding, Prospa, and Wood & Grieve Engineers alongside larger operators such as Colliers International and Coca-Cola Amatil New Zealand.

Ten of the top 15 are Australian businesses, with the remainder from New Zealand. See the full list of top employers below.

In March this year, LinkedIn research suggested that companies are using everything from LEGO rooms to discounted diamonds to boost engagement in the workplace. Yet Aon’s head of talent practice, Gerhard Diedericks, suggested simpler tactics are being used by employers of choice to increase staff morale and retention rates, and in turn drive productivity and growth.

“We are seeing companies placing increasing value on empowering their employees with the relevant skills to adapt to changing workplace environments. We really value the people-first approach Aon Best Employers are taking as they continue to make their talent more engaged by understanding what is important to them and enabling agile working environments,” he said.

Mr Diedericks said that while most businesses recognise the need for customer-centric experiences in the digital age, it is “employee experience [that] is the key lever” to deliver customer-centric operations.

“[The] best employers see a higher level of customer focus as a major benefit for having an engaged workforce,” he said.

“When employees are engaged, they naturally put more effort and care into their work and in customer interactions – a notable characteristic that sets [Aon] Best Employers apart from the rest.”
