My Business meets - Slim Secrets' Sharon Thurin

Sharon Thurin’s Slim Secrets makes a range of snack bars that are now exported to more than ten nations around the world. Sharon shares some of her business secrets with us in this Q&A.

Slim Secrets is an Australian brand which produces health snacks. Founded by Sharon Thurin, the company is an Australian success story as it now exports to ten nations. Sharon shares some of her experiences in this Q&A.

Q: What’s the one thing you wish you’d known before you started in business?

A: How addictive it can become and how it can absolutely take over every waking minute of your life!

Q: What are your most effective work habits?

A: I am a huge multi tasker and really want to enjoy a balanced working life (despite my answer in question 1). I start work very early in the morning usually responding to my export markets who have emailed me during the night, I then do some form of exercise (although have often been seen with my blackberry on the spin bike) and then am ready for the rest of the work day. At night I can often be found with computer on my lap replying to emails from my UK distributors who are ready to start their day or my Asian distributors who haven’t finished their work day yet. I am extremely organised and have a list of calls, to do lists etc in my blackberry calendar and there is nothing better than getting them all done with plenty of the day to spare!

Q: The most important person in my business is …

A: My family (Husband Peter and kids Jamie, Mel and Matt). Without their encouragement, support, pride and patience with me Slim Secrets definitely would not have reached the levels that it has today. They weren’t demanding of my time when they should’ve been and always understood if I just couldn’t prepare dinner and take away was an option. They are all also great to run my many ideas and thoughts by.

Q: Best business decision you’ve ever made?

A: Putting a considerable amount of our profits back into marketing. With the huge competition in the market place particularly on the supermarket shelves it has been important to do this to create the now recognisable Slim Secrets brand. Going to the US and having Slim Secrets involved in the Oscars a few times now has definitely given the brand a higher profile as well.

Q: How do you delight customers?

With our online store with every order we include a few extra product samples and the response we get to this is awesome!

A: Favorite websites and why they add value to your work?

A: I am loving Facebook as a business/marketing tool. We have a Facebook and twitter page for Slim Secrets (https://www.facebook.com/SlimSecrets) but I find for our business the Facebook page to be more effective. As a business that exports to over 10 countries now we can reach many of them via social networking. It is also a great way to keep track of what is going on in other businesses.

Q: How do you relax?

A: Exercise particularly walking along the river helps me relax. I also like to pamper myself with a massage after a stressful day. I also love going out with family and friends and sharing some food, wine and lots of laughs!
