Leah Calnan is the owner and sole director of Melbourne’s Metro Property Management, and has more than 17 years' experience in her industry.
Leah is very much a ‘hands on’ working director, and took out the Real Estate Institute of Victoria’s Residential Property Manager of the Year Award for 2010'.
She also believes property managers should encourage great relationships with the tenants of the properties they manage, as a quality tenant is key to a happy renting relationship.
Q: What’s the one thing you wish you’d known before you started in business?
A: It’s really hard! Much harder than it looks!
Q: What are your most effective work habits?
A: Every Sunday night I write a list of items to complete and achieve for the week.
Q: What’s the best business decision you’ve ever made?
A: Dissolving my business partnership – he thought sitting in his office and drawing a wage was working!
Q: How do you delight customers?
A: I write personal cards and notes all the time. Business still needs a personal touch!
Q: What’s your secret team-building tactic?
A: Be you! People work for people – not for companies. Something large organisations forget!
Q: Best tip for managing people?
A: Remember to say ‘Thank you!’, it goes a long way.
Q: What’s more important in business: passion or preparation? Why?
A: Passion! You need passion to keep you driven and determined. Anyone can prepare – but you can't pretend to be passionate.
Q: How do you relax?
Q: Generation Y: are they as demanding as everyone says?
A: If you inspire them and motivate them they can be very loyal.
Q: How do you foster and express creativity?
A: Always allow people to contribute, suggest new ideas and implement them! It will encourage them to do it again!
