With the winners announced for 2017, My Business editor Adam Zuchetti takes a look back at the SME community’s night of nights and what everyone in business should take away from it.

As I said in my address on the night, the Optus My Business Awards are a means of recognising all of your hard work, and showcasing the talents and the successes within Australia’s SMEs that all too often go unnoticed.

Our SME community provides the lion’s share of our jobs, generates the bulk of our economic growth, and delivers the essential and everyday services that make our great nation what it is. You aren’t just part of our economy – you ARE our economy.

Each year, I am simply awe-struck by the amazing things being accomplished by our SME sector. The intelligent innovations, the clever technologies, the inspiring leadership, the delivery for people in need… it is all on display, and all worthy of recognition and celebration.

And what is great to see is the passion behind these businesses. The cheers, the tears and the accidental F-bomb on stage are testament to just how much emotion and energy and effort you put into your businesses.

So regardless of who won on the night, I honestly believe that everyone in this year’s finalists deserves a huge congratulations for their efforts in making a difference to the lives of their customers, suppliers and employees. Well done, and keep up the hard work!

Thanks once again to our sponsors who helped make the night the resounding success it was: our principal partner Optus; platinum partner Viva Energy Australia; Gold partner Kwik Kopy; SME Rewards partner Qantas Business Rewards; and our event partners Bigstone, Business Energy Marketplace, MGA Insurance Brokers, Prospa, Sage Software Australia and Spike.

Thanks also to our judges for 2017 who volunteered their time for the painstaking task of selecting this year’s winners from among many worthy nominees.

It is hard to convey just how much goes into an event like the Optus My Business Awards. It is a whole year in the making, and when it comes together as it did on Friday night, it is a huge relief. Yet just as all of you know only too well: in business, the work is never done. Completion is no excuse for complacency.

As such, we welcome your feedback – the good and the bad – to help us ensure that we keep growing with you, our audience, and continue to provide an awards program that delivers for Australia’s SMEs.

So feel free to email me at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and share your thoughts.

Thank you to everyone who attended, and congratulations once again to all of the finalists and especially the winners on the night.
See you again next year!
