Online retail giant Amazon is set to expand its Australian footprint, announcing the launch of a second distribution centre on our shores, this time in Sydney's south-western suburbs.

Following its much-hyped launch in Australia in November last year, Amazon had been operating out of just one facility in Melbourne.

Now it has announced it has leased a new 43,000 sqm factory in Moorebank in the city’s south-west in a bid to scale up its domestic operations.

“We are thrilled to be establishing our next fulfilment centre in Sydney and working with incredible people in the local community around Moorebank,” Amazon Australia’s operations director, Robert Bruce, said.

“Sydney represents another important development for our growth strategy in Australia, following a steady and progressive increase in customer demand.

“This new facility builds on the capabilities of our first centre in Dandenong South, allowing us to continue to fulfill our commitment to fast and reliable deliveries for Australian customers. This investment will benefit both customers and the local economy by generating new jobs and providing small and medium sized Australian businesses who sell on amazon.com.au and use our Fulfillment by Amazon program, with an opportunity to more easily access millions of customers across the country.”

Operations at the facility are scheduled to commence in the second half of the year, with the company already seeking to recruit for staff to work at the facility, adding to the roughly 1,200 people it already employs in Australia.

The announcement comes just a week after the US-listed giant posted a 43 per cent increase in sales for the March quarter to a staggering $51 billion, and net income up, more than doubling the same quarter last year to $1.9 billion.

Moorebank is home to a number of freight and logistics businesses given it straddles the M5 motorway linking Sydney to Canberra, and lies close to the M7 Motorway that circles the western and northern outskirts of the city.
