Most popular Christmas gifts of 2018

Christmas, presents, gifts

Transaction data has revealed the most popular items finding their way into stockings and under the tree this Christmas, with sales of one product type soaring by 1,000 per cent year-on-year.

By far the most popular items in 2018, according to retail management software provider Vend, are eco-friendly and reusable products, with sales of these items up by more than 1,000 per cent compared to 2017.

The company said that reusable coffee cups, such as Keep Cups, have seen sales soar by the same amount, while beeswax food wraps are up by 600 per cent and bamboo straws by 420 per cent.

“It looks like many of us could be receiving some pretty cool gifts come Christmas day, as shoppers hunt out more tech items like drones and look to new, sustainable products,” Vend’s Dave Scheine said.

Activewear is also a popular choice, with sales spiking by 230 per cent.

Computers and accessories also remain popular, with sales up by 300 per cent on the same time last year, while sales of drones and virtual reality products have increased by 74 per cent.

Other popular items are older-style products making a popular comeback.

Vend’s data showed that vintage vinyl and records have seen sales soar by 260 per cent compared to a year earlier, while even book sales have spiked by 78 per cent this year.

But there is also no substitute for some of the old classics, Mr Scheine said.

“Our data shows that a lot of our traditional go-to gifts, like socks for Dad, chocolates for Gran, and a handbag for Mum, are still very much a popular choice,” he said.

“For example, sock purchases have increased by 51 per cent year-on-year, chocolates are up by 65 per cent and bags are up by 147 per cent.”

The data was collated from a sample of 3,000 Australian retailers, the majority of which are SMEs, on transactions made between 24 November and 16 December in both 2017 and 2018.
