A new Dick Smith survey has alarmingly found that 90 per cent of office workers name mundane technical glitches such as paper jams, printer and photocopier issues are the biggest office time wasters.
The Dick Smith Productivity Study – which polled 252 office workers and 251 small business owners in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth – concludes that a combined 71 million hours are wasted on office technical glitches a year, costing businesses $1 billion.
The survey has revealed the white collar worker spends more than two working weeks each year grappling with technical issues. 22 per cent have spent a whole day trying to solve the problem, while 30 per cent have had to re-do documents after computers have crashed and almost one in five have been late for a meeting because of printer issues.
Greg Hirsch, Dick Smith’s Office Merchandise Manager says that more and more demands are now placed on technology and that devices are being outgrown at a faster rate than they’re being replaced.
“There is a lack of understanding on how to best use technological devices,” Hirsch argue. “For example, many people put pressure on their hardware to store data, when a more efficient ‘cloud’ storage system will get better results and prevent computer crashes and delays.”
Unsurprisingly, the survey also found that the vast majority (88 per cent) of office workers believe investing in new technology will save their time and ultimately, increase workplace productivity. However, 52 per cent claim their employer isn’t convinced enough to invest in new equipment, with four in 10 believing their organisation will delay upgrading if their existing technology still works.

- One in four office workers have felt like smashing a computer or laptop screen when issues strike.
- Seven per cent have cried due to lost documents or computer crashes.
- 77 per cent of Australian organisations still use a fax machine.
