Recognising the challenges small business owners face, the New South Wales government have a range of resources available for SMEs. This includes the Small Business Friendly Councils initiative.

Small Business Friendly Councils provides local councils with information and tools to help them empower local businesses to start and grow. As part of this initiative, the government has also launched the 'Easy to do business' program to remove the red tape around opening a new business.

What is the Small Business Friendly Councils program?

Small Business Friendly Councils was developed by the New South Wales Small Business Commissioner and My Business.

The initiative provides local councils in New South Wales with the information and resources to support local businesses, both now and in the future. It also focuses on regulatory reform through the ‘Easy to do business’ initiative. Councils have access to case studies on best practice and policy, and fact sheets on key issues. Finally, the Small Business Friendly Councils NSW has a networking group for information sharing and problem-solving.

In addition to providing resources, the program also hosts regular events and workshops, including the Small Business Friendly Councils conference. The Small Business Friendly Councils inaugural conference was held in 2019 and aimed to help local councils supercharge their local economy.
