What is an ABN?
An ABN makes it easier to keep track of business transactions for tax purposes. It's an 11 digit number that uniquely identifies your business to the government and community. An ABN is public and doesn't replace your tax file number.
Is it compulsory to get an ABN?
It's compulsory for businesses with a Goods Services Tax (GST) turnover of $75,000 or more to have an ABN and to be registered for GST.
Is everyone entitled to get an ABN?
Not everyone is entitled to an ABN. You're entitled to an ABN if:
- you intend to or have already started an enterprise in Australia.
- making supplies connected with Australia's indirect tax zone
- a Corporations Act company.
Businesses with a GST turnover of less than $75,000 can still apply for an ABN and may choose to register for GST once they have an ABN. You need to have an ABN and be registered for GST to claim GST credits for any GST you have paid for goods or services you have used in your business.
If a business does not register for GST, because the income will not exceed the $75,000 threshold, the decision also needs to be made whether you'll need to register for an ABN. We suggest you speak to your accountant for further advice if you have questions relating to this.
How do I apply for an ABN?
The Australian Business Register (ABR) is responsible for the ABN application process.
ABN registration details become part of the Australian Business Register (ABR). You can access the publicly available information contained in the ABR through the ABN Lookup website.
How much does it cost to get an ABN?
It's free to apply for an ABN. However, if you use a tax agent to complete an application, then there may be a fee for their service. Otherwise, there is no cost.
How long does it take to get an ABN?
You'll receive an online notification immediately once you complete the application — provided you have supplied all the required information.
If there is missing information, the application will need to be reviewed manually, which can take up to 28 business days. If you want to check on the progress, please contact the ABR.
Can the same ABN be used for more than one business?
Yes, you can operate multiple businesses and activities under the same ABN provided it's under the same business structure. Otherwise, you need to apply for separate ABNs for each new business structure.
When should I update my ABN details?
You must update your details within 28 days once you become aware of any changes. The best way to update your details is through ABR online services. All changes made to your ABN online will take effect immediately. You can update your details here.
How do I cancel my ABN?
If your business has been sold, closed down, no longer operating in Australia or making supplies connected with Australia, you should cancel your ABN.
Before cancelling your ABN, just double-check you've done all your lodgment, reporting and payment obligations. If you want to cancel your pay as you go withholding, you will need to cancel this first before you withdraw your ABN.
